Title: General Manager

Organization: WICN Public Radio, Inc.

Description: WICN Public Radio, Inc., New England's Jazz and Folk Station, located in the Central Massachusetts market seeks a General Manager. Reporting to the board of directors, this position is responsible for all operations of the station including human resource management, fundraising, programming, volunteer cultivation, community relations, financial reporting, regulatory compliance, and technology/engineering. Located in a six-year-old, state of the art studio and attractive office setting in downtown Worcester, MA, WICN is a 40-year-old NPR affiliate with a small paid staff, many volunteers and an operating budget of roughly $400,000. WICN provides almost an entire day of predominately jazz with a mix of folk programming that serves a loyal, long time listener base. 

With our new antenna, the station services an area that encompasses a population of approximately 600,000 people. The station is a cultural force in the Worcester and Central MA area and highly regarded within the jazz community for its live local programs and ambitious concert schedule. This position is an opportunity for a strong, creative, and dynamic leader who enjoys independence and can work effectively with a team of staff and volunteers in a "hands on" approach within a fast paced and entrepreneurial environment. 

Key Responsibilities:

  • General Management. The general manager must have strong general management skills and is responsible for all aspects of operations including operating budget, human resources, legal (including FCC and CPB) regulations, licensing requirements, state and federal reporting requirements, and technical operations including transmitter, tower, web site, and physical plant. The successful candidate should have strong skills in planning, organizing, oversight, supervision and communication with multiple constituencies.  Cultivating strong volunteer participation is important. 
  • Funding and Development. The general manager has primary responsibility for fundraising and membership development including on-air, mail, corporate sponsorship and underwriting support. The general manager has responsibility for maintaining and expanding funding from both public and private grant sources. Public Relations The general manager is the public face of WICN in the community, with the media, and in our strategic partnerships. The general manager works closely with the board and networks and maintains key relationships with various foundations, partners, and community resources.
  • Programming. The general manager oversees all programming including live and purchased on-air, streaming, concerts, and community programs. The GM ensures compliance with copyright and royalty regulations.  A passion for public radio is required. Experience in public radio and/or jazz programming is preferred.  The general manager is responsible for planning and implementing new technologies and media delivery platforms, and using Arbitron and listener survey data to build listener loyalty and support.
  • Strategy and Planning. The GM is responsible for working with the board of directors to develop strategy and plans to enhance WICN's positioning as a premier jazz station and as an important cultural resource and center of influence in the community. The general manager develops plans for the station's long term fiscal and operational strength, and is also responsible for developing a vision for the station's Internet presence. WICN has a number of strategic partnerships within the community, which the General Manager will nurture and develop.    

Requirements: Proven leadership and execution abilities in at least several of the key functional areas noted in the description, especially related to revenue generation. Prior experience in public radio a definite plus, as is knowledge of WICN's music format, audiences, and creators.
