Position Title: Program Director
Organization: KFAI
Description:
THE PROGRAM DIRECTOR IS RESPONSIBLE FOR:
· Management, coordination and evaluation of program schedule;
· Directing overall sound quality of program schedule;
· Coordination of production activities,
· Providing technical and production assistance to on-air programmers and volunteers; and,
· Programming outreach.
SPECIFIC DUTIES
Programming (40% of time)
· Work with programming committee on maintaining integrity of KFAI’s programming schedule, including implementation of programming on KFAI’s second or third channels and other related initiatives;
· Develop programs to fill needs for music, talk, public and/or community affairs, and news programming in conjunction with News Director;
· Assure high quality air sound throughout programming schedule;
· Manage evaluation process of programming including advising programmers about concerns regarding the sensitive language policy, technical issues, or quality of program content and other programming policies, and maintaining the integrity of the KFAI’s mission statement throughout the program schedule;
· Enforce programming policies with guidance from Program Committee;
· Coordinate and ensure production of all special programming;
· Work with News Director to ensure integration of news and public affairs with overall station schedule;
· Manage program committee meetings including timely distribution of meeting materials and communication with committee members and directing meeting agenda, in conjunction with co-chair;
· Assist potential programmers with the abstract submission schedule;
· Schedule replacement and fill-in programmers;
· Manage trafficking software and ensure preparation of daily station logs, in conjunction with Underwriting & Marketing Director;
· Manage and maintain programming files and materials in the on-air and production studios including blank play lists, FCC guidelines and procedural manual and public service announcement book;
· Obtain, analyze and utilize Arbitron information and/or other programming related research data;
· Assist Membership & Volunteer Director with preparing programmers for pledge drive;
· Assist programmers or volunteers with equipment troubleshooting;
· Update and maintain information about programming on station’s website; and,
· Develop and manage annual budget for program department;
Training (25% of time)
· Design, implement and manage training process of new and existing programmers, in conjunction with the Training Committee, as a means of maintaining a consistent level of technical ability for all programmers.
· Schedule and maintain ongoing training classes for all skill levels, beginning to advanced; and,
· Work with the Training Committee to develop printed materials pertinent to volunteer training, volunteer contracts, informational materials, and specialized training workshops conducted by professional consultants.
Programming Promotion and Outreach (20% of time)
· Coordinate all station forward promotion including managing production of promo carts for entire programming day and special programming initiatives;
· Develop and administer audience surveys in conjunction with Membership & Volunteer Director;
· Manage process for design and distribution of program related promotional materials including KFAI Program Guide;
· Provide programming information to Membership and Volunteer Director for station e-newsletter;
· Act as liaison with local music venues and promoters for publicity, promotion and giveaways;
· Manage ticket giveaways and event sponsorships with venues and non-profit organizations;
· Manage station remotes in conjunction with KFAI Engineer;
· Act as liaison with community groups to solicit special programming, new programs or project-specific initiatives;
· Develop and administer line item budgets for Program Department; and,
· Other duties as assigned.
Music Direction (10% of time)
· Manage operations of the music library including supervision of volunteers working with the music library and label relations;
· Oversee acquisition of music premiums.
Production and Distribution (5% of time)
· Coordinate production room schedule;
· Work with independent producers to ensure high-quality production of produced materials; and,
· Manage process of studio rental including invoicing process in conjunction with Executive Director.
Requirements: A four year post-secondary degree or equivalent experience is mandatory, with three to five years experience in broadcast programming management, audio production, project development and management, and supervision of volunteers and/or interns. Excellent written and oral communication skills, attention to detail, ability to meet deadlines and work effectively with diverse constituents are prerequisites for success in this position. Language fluency is a plus, however not required.
Comments: KFAI offers multi-format and eclectic programming that supports an inclusive community with both mainstream and alternative news, public affairs and music. KFAI, also known as “Radio Without Boundaries” operates at 90.3 FM and 106.7 FM, covering a 15-20 mile radius in and around the Twin Cities, and on
www.kfai.org. KFAI is completing a conversion from analog to digital reception and increasing power to 900 watts in late summer. High definition broadcasting will begin fall 2008, with initiatives to create second channel programming by 2009.KFAI, Fresh Air Radio is a volunteer-based community radio station that broadcasts information, arts and entertainment programming for an audience of diverse racial, social and economic backgrounds. By providing a voice for people not represented by mainstream media, KFAI increases understanding among peoples and communities, while fostering values of democracy and social justice.
