Position Title: News Director Organization: KERA, North Texas Public Broadcasting

Description: North Texas Public Broadcasting, Inc. has an opening for a news director. This position oversees KERA’s news service, including local reports, commentaries and newscasts during Morning Edition and All Things Considered. The news director will also develop, launch and produce a new half-hour radio/online news program scheduled to air weekdays. This position develops, coordinates and oversees all multimedia news content consistent with KERA’s high journalistic standards and public service ethics. Our ideal candidate will have excellent news judgment and editing skills; experience in multimedia storytelling; excellent management and organizational skills; and demonstrated ability to work collaboratively across departments and with external partners.

The news director manages the news personnel, including the senior managing editor, local Morning Edition host/senior editor, local All Things Considered host, reporters, Web news editor/producer and freelancers. This position runs editorial meetings; makes story assignments and approves scripts; produces reports, interviews and special projects; coordinates with KERA’s Art&Seek arts service, television production, kera.org and other divisions to develop multiplatform content; establishes and maintains partnerships to further KERA’s content goals; and ensures high journalistic standards of accuracy, thoroughness, fairness and balance are met. The news director also represents KERA at professional and community meetings, participates in on-air fundraising, and plans and administers the news budget.  

Qualifications/Requirements: The successful candidate will have a BA degree in journalism or related field or evidence of significant professional accomplishment in journalism. A minimum of 5 years experience in news management and excellent written and verbal communication skills are required. This position requires excellent script editing and story organization skills; knowledge of sound editing and digital radio production; and knowledge of online news platforms and production. Excellent team leadership skills and the ability to motivate others are also required, as well as a thorough knowledge of broadcast journalism standards, operations and ethics. Knowledge of the public broadcasting system and familiarity with NPR/PBS content preferred.
