Qualities of Classical Music with Negative Appeal in Middays 

The following qualities were identified by project partner stations from listening to Negative Appeal samples tested in the

PRPD Classical Music Testing Project.

The more of these characteristics in a piece, the more likely it will be appealing

  • Dissonant (non-traditional harmonies)

  • Unstructured

  • Extreme  dynamic range

  • Frantic or aggressive

  • Not in the classical ‘mold’

  • Lack of forward motion

  • Schmaltzy Pops’

  • Extremely quiet or sparse

  • Lack of melody

  • Dark

  • Demanding

  • Anxiety inducing

  • Dense / shouting

  • Overwrought (bulging veins)

  • Hypervirtuosity without melody
