Welcome to the PD Handbook

The PD Handbook is a comprehensive resource for Program Directors – an overview of the principles, skills and accumulated knowledge for public radio programmers. It is designed as a portal to “all things PD” – an up-to-date and evolving knowledge base with links to relevant resources both on the PRPD website and beyond.  It is available to PRPD members only and requires you to log in to the site.

We hope and expect that you, the users, will provide feedback and new ideas on an ongoing basis. This is very much a “work in progress” and we hope to keep it that way, constantly adding to the knowledge available to PD’s.

The original Public Radio Program Director’s Handbook was published in 1989, written by Marcia Alvar, Peter Dominowski and Craig Oliver based on the groundbreaking “PD Bee” workshops held from 1986-1988. It serves as the text for PRPD’s basic skills PD Workshop.  Previously revised in 1994, this online version was completely reworked and updated in 2006 by Arthur Cohen, Peter Dominowski, and web developer Ric Way - with assistance and feedback from more than 30 colleagues.
