A new report by the Pew Internet & American Life Project finds that connecting with friends and family is the primary reason people use social media.
This is especially true for women, with 72% naming family connections as a main reason for using social media. A much smaller number of people use social media to read comments by public figures (5%) or to find dates (3%) Those who use Twitter are the most likely to be interested in following public figures through social media, although only 11% of Twitter users say that this is a major reason for using social media.
